Life on this side of the Sound is organized around the Tacoma Narrows Bridge — when to cross it, what the toll is that month, whether the wind has shut it. The bridge went into the name because it describes the territory. The truck is stocked at 4425 Harbor Country Dr NW, off Olympic Drive and Highway 16, and the ring it covers in half an hour reaches the Key Peninsula and Port Orchard on this shore, Fircrest, the North End and Browns Point on the other. The toll runs eastbound. It is paid on the way home, by us.
Repair work here follows the water and the weather. Private wells feed much of the peninsula, so iron and scale account for many of the dishwasher, ice-maker and washer calls, with an empty softener frequently the real culprit. Houses facing salt water lose condenser fans and terminals early. A November windstorm takes the power for a night, and the next morning the phone fills with refrigerators that will not restart. Most kitchens cook on propane, complete with the yellow flames a careless conversion leaves behind. Across the bridge the faults age instead: 1920s North End basements, thirty-foot dryer vents, laundry closets in Downtown condos. The truck is stocked for precisely that list.
How a visit unfolds
Phone or form, then a two-hour window and a text as the truck rolls — or as it comes off the bridge deck, for Tacoma stops. At the machine the meter comes out before any opinion does. The failed component gets an everyday name — a scaled-shut fill valve, a defrost heater, a drum roller — and the repair gets one figure on the ticket with the $99 counted inside. Yes, and the part is usually already on board, with a complete cycle run before we load up. No, and $99 is the whole visit; the diagnosis leaves with you. Either way the floor looks as it did, and the cabinet panels sit straight.

Second homes, rentals, gates
A good share of the houses on Fox Island, Raft Island and the Key Peninsula are second homes or rentals, and many peninsula roads end at a gate or a dock. So owners approve by text from Seattle or Portland while a neighbor or tenant opens the door, the invoice and the coverage term arrive by email, and the gate code stays in the job notes only until the repair is closed.
