From the shop we take Hwy 16 north and come off at Burley-Olalla Rd, or run up Crescent Valley Rd the whole way when the highway is slow, and the two roads meet near Al's Market on Olalla Bay. Banner Rd, Olalla Valley Rd and the lanes above Colvos Passage carry most of the addresses; Fragaria and the Nelson Rd side fill in the rest. Almost every driveway is gravel and a good deal of it is long, so we ask for the house color and any gate when you book. The truck is a full-size van, and it has yet to meet an Olalla driveway it could not manage.
Almost nobody in Olalla is on a public water system. Private wells here run hard, and many carry enough iron and manganese to stain a washer drum grey and a dishwasher interior orange within a few years. Softeners and iron filters are common, and half our cloudy-glass calls turn out to be a brine tank that ran dry. The houses are 1970s farmhouses, 1990s acreage builds and a few new places with view kitchens over the passage, nearly all on septic and cooking on propane from a tank behind the garage. When the November wind takes PSE down for two days, generators keep freezers cold but their rough power can confuse an inverter compressor or a washer board, and we test for that before anyone shops for a new machine.

A good inverter generator is fine; a cheap one with rough output can damage the control board on a newer refrigerator. If a refrigerator stopped working during or after generator use, do not replace it yet. The board is a single part, and the diagnostic tells you whether that is all it needs.

An Olalla dishwasher has two enemies: the well and the septic. Scale and iron coat the element, dull the glasses and orange the tub; a full tank or a slow drain field backs water into the sump. Nearly every range in Olalla runs on a propane tank, and a flame that is yellow, lifts off the burner or will not turn down for a simmer means the range was never converted or the regulator has given up. Olalla well water is the ice maker's problem. Scale and iron choke the fill valve, the cubes shrink and turn hollow, and eventually none come at all; tea-colored ice says the iron filter has waited too long. We time the fill at the valve, check the tube for a frozen plug, and test the module before naming a part. When well scale has narrowed a fill valve it keeps dripping after it closes, and in a cold garage or an unheated kitchen that drip freezes in the fill tube. Replacing the valve stops the drip. If the ice maker has quit more than once, tell us and we check the tube heater too.
