Parking is easy, the streets are wide, and the houses are close to the curb, so the truck is in and out quickly. The bridge toll comes out of our pocket on the way east and appears nowhere on a Fircrest invoice; the price card is the same one we use in Gig Harbor.
Most Fircrest houses are 1940s to 1960s ramblers with a carport or single garage, a kitchen sized for a 30-inch range and a laundry space off the kitchen or in the garage. Many have had one or two owners, and the appliances reflect it: long-lived Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and GE machines kept running past twenty years, alongside a newer French-door refrigerator or front-load washer where a kitchen or laundry was redone. The water is soft Tacoma Water, so scale is rare and the faults are age: worn dryer rollers, bake elements that finally open, refrigerator defrost heaters, washer transmissions and drain pumps.
