Air off the Sound carries salt as fine spray and as a haze you never see. It settles on every metal surface it reaches, and where the surface is warm or damp it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it there. That is the whole mechanism. A condenser coil runs warm all day and sits low behind the kick plate, so it collects the film and rusts from the fin edges inward. Steel screws, spade connectors, igniter brackets and the small springs inside an ice maker follow. Corrosion adds electrical resistance, raises running temperatures and slows heat transfer, so the machine works harder until a weak part gives up.
On the peninsula the exposure is strongest along Henderson Bay, Hale Passage and Carr Inlet, where a wind off the water reaches the garage door most afternoons. Fox Island view homes with a second freezer in the garage, the older waterfront places on Harborview Dr, the cabins at Kopachuck and the newer builds around Purdy Spit all show the same pattern. Across the Narrows, Ruston Way condos and the bungalows above Point Defiance get the Commencement Bay version of it. A garage refrigerator with the door open to the beach half the summer is the most exposed appliance on the list. Inland Canterwood or Fircrest machines of the same age simply do not show this.

Call when the refrigerator holds above forty degrees on a full setting, when a burner clicks for more than a few seconds before lighting, or when the ice maker has been silent for two days. Call sooner on a waterfront place that sits empty for weeks, because a corroded fan that stalls in July will spoil a freezer before anyone notices. If a machine is under ten years old and the problem is one corroded part, repair is usually the right answer, and we say so with a number on paper. When the cabinet itself is rusting through, we say that too.
Yes, and by a measurable margin. A condenser coil that stays clean for a decade in Fircrest can clog with rust flakes in four or five years on Hale Passage. The compressor then runs hot and takes its start relay with it early. Nothing is wrong with the machine itself; its address is simply harder on it. Regular coil cleaning and a closed garage door recover most of the difference.
Usually, if it is kept off the beach side of the garage and the door stays closed. The trouble starts when a second freezer sits by an open door all summer. If the fan or relay has gone, we replace it and write a warranty on the work. If the cabinet is rusting through at the base, we tell you before you spend more on it.
The spark electrode and its ground path have picked up a salt film that raises resistance, so the spark is weak or lands in the wrong place. Sometimes the spark module has corroded contacts as well. We test the module output, clean or replace the electrodes and confirm each burner lights cleanly. The same film reaches the oven glow bar and weakens it.
The ice maker is a module. When the mold thermostat or ejector motor corrodes we replace the module or the fill valve and the refrigerator stays. The exception is a built-in on Fox Island where the sealed system has rusted through, which is rare. Either way the answer follows the meter reading, goes on paper, and carries the $99 diagnosis within the repair figure.
