After the outage: what a PSE windstorm does to appliances

The power comes back on Fox Island after two days and the refrigerator hums but never cools, the washer shows a code, the oven display is dark.

After the outage: what a PSE windstorm does to appliances

An outage harms appliances in three ways. First, the loss itself: a freezer in the garage holds for a day or so, then thaws, and the meltwater runs into the defrost drain and refreezes when power returns. Second, the return of power: lines come back with surges and brownouts as crews restore circuits, and a control board that survived the storm can fail in the first hour of restored service. Third, the generator: a portable unit with dirty output feeds an inverter compressor or a washer board a waveform it was never designed for, and the board locks out or fails. Each leaves a different trace, and each is testable with a meter.

Chambers Bay, the Key Peninsula and Fox Island lose power for days in a bad November, and the Fox Island Bridge is the only way a truck gets in. Lakebay and Home run generators as a matter of course; so do the view homes above Hale Passage and the waterfront cabins at Kopachuck. In Gig Harbor proper the outages are shorter but the surges on restoration are the same. Across the bridge the North End and Ruston Way see fewer long outages, though a Point Defiance transformer can still put a block in the dark. The week after a storm we test what the outage did before anyone buys a new machine.

What you can check yourself

  • Leave the freezer door shut through the outage; a full chest holds two days that way.
  • Once power returns, give the refrigerator six hours before deciding it is not cooling.
  • Photograph any code on a washer or oven display before you clear it.
  • Check whether the refrigerator light works; no light and no hum points to the outlet or breaker.
  • Toss anything that thawed and refroze; a bin frozen into one block says the freezer was warm.
  • Write down when the power went off and came back; the timeline helps the diagnosis.

When a call is the right move

Call when the refrigerator has been back on for a day and the shelves are still above forty degrees, when a code returns after you clear it, or when a machine that worked before the storm is dead with power at the outlet. Call before buying a replacement, because a start relay or a thermal fuse is a small repair and a board is a known number, not a guess. On Fox Island and the Key Peninsula we group calls the week after a storm so the truck crosses the bridge once and works down the list. Warm refrigerators get first claim on the same-day windows.

Questions

The freezer thawed on the Key Peninsula during the outage; is the compressor ruined?

Rarely. A thaw is a food problem, not a compressor problem. What we find afterward is a defrost drain plugged with refrozen meltwater, a coil iced over, or a start relay that failed on restart. Each is a repair with a written number. If the compressor itself measures open or shorted, you hear it plainly and the choice is set out on paper.

Can a generator damage appliances on Fox Island?

A portable generator with poor voltage regulation can. Inverter compressors and washer control boards are sensitive to the waveform, and a brownout during startup can lock a board out or fail it. An inverter-type generator or a transfer switch on a standby unit avoids most of it. We test the board rather than assume, since many simply need a reset.

Every clock in the house reset after the storm; is that damage?

No. A reset clock only means the power dropped. Damage shows as a machine that will not respond, a code that keeps returning, or an oven that lights but will not hold temperature. Take a photo of any code and send it with the request form so we bring the likely board.

Does PSE or insurance cover surge damage to my refrigerator near Chambers Bay?

That depends on the policy and the claim, and we are not the ones to answer it. What we provide is a written diagnosis that names the failed part and the likely cause, which is what an adjuster asks for. Should you go ahead with the work, the $99 diagnostic is absorbed into it.

How quickly can you reach Lakebay after a windstorm?

Once Hwy 302 and the Purdy Bridge are open, same-week, with a warm refrigerator taking a same-day slot when the schedule allows. We take gate codes and lockbox details on the form; a second-home owner in Seattle texts back an approval, then finds the invoice and warranty waiting in their inbox.

The visit, in order

Dispatch, meter, parts, paper

01 · DISPATCH

A window, then a text

Phone or form, either way a dispatcher sends a two-hour window and a text the moment the truck rolls — from Harbor Country Drive, or off the bridge deck for Tacoma stops.

02 · METER

The fault gets a name

Clamp meter, thermometer, manometer where propane is involved. The failed component is identified and explained, and one figure goes on paper with the $99 built into it.

03 · PARTS

Usually on board

The truck carries what salt air, iron water and outages break: fill valves, defrost heaters, igniters, rollers, relays. Anything ordered comes back on our schedule, not your bill.

04 · PAPER

Cycle, clean-up, coverage

A complete run of the machine while you watch, the floor and panels put back as found, and the warranty term printed on the invoice.

After the outage: one call, one written number.

$99 gets the meter on it, the figure goes on the ticket, the part is usually already on board, and the coverage term is printed on the invoice. Same card on both shores of the Narrows.
