The homes are spread out and the driveways are long, so we ask for a gate code or lockbox detail when you call, and the technician texts when the bridge is behind him. There is no mileage charge for the island and never has been. Second refrigerators in garages, chest freezers full of salmon, a generator wired to the panel: we plan the visit around what island houses actually own, not around what a city apartment owns.
Private wells serve most of Fox Island, and what comes up is hard and carries iron and manganese besides. That shows up as orange streaks in the dishwasher, a black ring in the washer drum and an ice maker fill valve that closes to a whisper within a few years. Salt off Hale Passage does the rest: condenser coils in a garage fridge lose their fins, the igniters on a propane range pit and crack, and a refrigerator left on a covered deck simply corrodes. Most kitchens here cook on propane, and a range delivered set up for natural gas will burn yellow and soot pans until someone changes the orifices. Windstorm outages take out control boards, and a generator with rough output confuses an inverter compressor.

A garage refrigerator on the Carr Inlet side, warm on a Saturday morning after years with the garage door open to the water. The condenser fins have gone to powder and the fan motor is seized. One number on paper, both replaced, coils cleaned, and a suggestion to keep that door shut.
A propane dryer off Island Blvd that lights, runs warm for five minutes and then blows cold. The flame sensor and one coil on the gas valve test bad. We replace both, check the vent under the deck, and leave the owner with a written warranty and a dry load.

Well water. Hardness and iron build up in the fill valve and the fill line, so less water reaches the mold with every cycle and the cubes turn out short and cloudy. We flush or replace the valve, clear the line, and test whether the softener is keeping up, because an empty salt tank shows up in the ice first.
Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung and Maytag in most houses; in the bigger waterfront kitchens it is Sub-Zero and Wolf, Thermador, Viking, and Fisher & Paykel. We service all of them as an independent shop; where the maker's own coverage still applies we say so before any work starts.
