Count the kitchens in a split-level off Skyline Drive and you get three. The first had a drainboard and no machine. The second, done in the 1980s, put a portable on casters by the sink. The current one has a panel-front Bosch or a KitchenAid under stone. Every remodel bequeathed a detail to the next: a drain hose dropped straight into the disposal with no rise, a supply valve that stops halfway, a receptacle sharing a breaker with the disposal. So a dishwasher that stops emptying or refuses to start is checked against that history first. Green River water arrives soft, so the element in a West End dishwasher never wears a crust of scale and glasses do not fog with mineral. The circulation pump is trying to turn against a seized impeller, or its run capacitor has failed and it cannot start at all. We empty the sump of glass and pits, test the windings and the capacitor, and fit whichever one failed. A pump that turns easily and quietly once the sump is emptied stays in, and the invoice says why.
Blocked spray arm ports, a wash pump down on pressure, or a filter nobody has lifted out since installation. The arms come off for clearing, the filter gets washed, measure spray pressure mid-cycle and load-test the pump. The heater gets metered too, because water that never reaches temperature leaves the same film on the plates.
A latch switch in the door, the board itself, a thermal fuse on the panel, or a breaker tripping when the disposal shares it. Usually one of three things: a drain pump choked on glass or a stone from a plum, a check valve hanging open, or a hose that was run flat under the sink during a remodel so the sink drains back into the tub.
